The Best Way to Sell a Large Collection
There are four real ways to sell a substantial collection. Each is right for somebody. Here’s who — without the sales pitch.
Option 1: Sell it yourself, piece by piece
Best for: sellers with deep knowledge of the material, real time, and patience measured in years. Done well, individual selling can gross the most — but “done well” means researching, photographing, listing, answering questions, negotiating, packing and shipping hundreds of items, absorbing fees and returns, and accepting that the common material may never sell at all. Knowledge matters most here: mispricing your best pieces costs more than any buyer’s margin.
Option 2: Auction house
Best for: collections with genuinely rare, high-end pieces that benefit from competitive bidding and cataloging. The trade-offs: seller’s commissions, months between consignment and settlement, no guaranteed prices, and limited interest in the mid-range and common material that makes up most of most collections. Option 3: Consignment
Best for: sellers in no hurry who want retail exposure without doing the selling. You wait for items to sell one at a time, pay the shop’s percentage when they do, and eventually retrieve what didn’t. Timelines are open-ended by design.
Option 4: Direct sale to a buyer
Best for: sellers who value speed, certainty and zero effort — heirs, downsizers, retiring collectors, executors on deadlines. One evaluation, one combined offer covering the whole collection including the common material, payment on completion, packing and transport handled. The honest caveat: a direct sale won’t always match the theoretical maximum of years of individual selling. What it offers is a certain number now versus an uncertain number later.
