How to Sell an Inherited Antique Collection
You’ve inherited a collection you didn’t build and may not understand. Here’s the order of operations that protects its value — and your time.
Step 1: Don’t throw anything away
This is the whole game. The costly mistakes with inherited collections aren’t bad sales — they’re good items discarded by people who couldn’t recognize them. Coin folders that look like old paperwork, cards in unlabeled shoeboxes, a camera in a scuffed case, radio equipment “that doesn’t work.” Until someone knowledgeable has looked, nothing goes in the trash, the donation pile or the estate-sale free table.
Step 2: Resist the urge to organize
Well-meaning heirs often sort, clean and repackage collections before selling — and reduce their value doing it. Cleaning coins can destroy most of their worth.
